1) I don’t know what to serve at my wedding but I’m pretty sure I don’t want those people cooking for me..

2) I need to eat more fruit.

New Faces in Horror?

A few years ago I discovered a superb apocalyptic, mass-hysteria film called The Signal (2007).

Both of these men appeared in The Signal.

The man in the top photograph is AJ Bowen and since seeing The Signal a few years ago I’ve spotted him in Ti West’s 80s throwback, 2009 film, House of the Devil and then, again, more recently in the less-than-stellar Hatchet II with another familiar face in horror (besides veteran horror actor, Candyman himself, Tony Todd), Danielle Harris who was donning one of the worst Louisiana accents I’ve ever heard in my life, even worse than those in the True Blood cast done by people from Australia, the U.K., New Zealand and Canada! I’ve been very excited every time I’ve seen AJ Bowen in the few horror films I’ve seen him in, because while Hatchet II was far from good, he was far from bad in the movie, I definitely enjoy his work and hope to see him in more horror films soon. If you look up AJ Bowen on IMDB you’ll see that I’ve neglected to mention his appearance in Creepshow III, I haven’t seen it and I do not acknowledge that as a third installment to the King horror anthologies. Much like I ignore The Godfather part 3.

Pictured below is the other star of The Signal, Justin Welborn. Just a few days ago I watched Dance of the Dead (2008) where Welborn played a high school student with a rebellious streak. While Welborn’s character, Ben, was so calm and level-headed in The Signal it was almost strange to see him as a hyper-active psychopath in Dance of the Dead. It took seconds for me to recognize him as he almost reminds me of Simon Pegg, just not nearly as handsome as Pegg himself…sorry, Justin..He’s also appeared in Halloween II, the remake of George A. Romero’s The Crazies and Final Destination 3D.

While both have starred in some not-so-great recent horror film remakes or sequels I have to say that both of their performances in Bruckner/Bush/Gentry’s The Signal had a lasting impression on me. It was by far one of the best horror films made in the past 10 years. I hold it in high esteem with other recent genre inductees, Pontypool, Splinter, House of the Devil (also starring Bowen), Inside, Martyrs and Grace. Whether Bowen’s performance as the mad as a loon, possessive Husband or Welborn’s relaxed, good-guy, hero persona they both MADE The Signal what it was, a great modern day horror film. Let’s hope that they have much more to offer us in the near future. Someone get them a decent script, pronto!

With April 1st approaching I am somewhat anxious to revisit the...

With April 1st approaching I am somewhat anxious to revisit the 1986 film, April Fool’s Day. I may have to have a double feature and pair it with another 1986 film that was also going to be titled, April Fool’s Day but had to change it’s title to…my favorite slasher film of all time…Slaughter High.

For other horror films with “jokes” (especially jokes gone wrong..especially in slasher films..) I’d highly suggest checking out the following titles:

The Burning (1981)

Carrie (1976)

Prom Night (1980)

Terror Train (1980)

The House on Sorority Row (1983)

Pranks, aka The Dorm that Dripped Blood (1982)

Word to the wise, playing jokes on people is all fun and games until you try to pull a prank on a Marty, a Cropsy or even a Carrie.
